🏔️ Vârful Cindrel in Winter – Waist-Deep Snow and a Trail That Tests Your Patience

🧪 A Test of Patience, Effort and Silent Swearing

Winter hikes are beautiful, they say. Fresh air, dreamy landscapes, total silence. What nobody tells you is that if you don't have snowshoes, you'll sink in every 10 metres and regret every choice in your life. That was Vârful Cindrel (vârf = peak), 11 January 2025 – a combination of -16°C, waist-deep snow and a trail that tested my limits, and my vocabulary too.

🎥 Video – It's Easier to Watch Than to Read

If you can't be bothered to read it all, here's the drone video – this is what the mountain looks like when you're not the one struggling up it. 😅

📍 The Route – Where, When and How Much Did I Suffer?

📌 Date: 11 January 2025

📌 Start time: 9:05 AM

📌 Total distance: 19.99 km

📌 Actual walking time: 5 hours and 20 minutes

📌 Total time including breaks, filming and photos: 6 hours and 13 minutes

📌 Elevation gain: 788 m

📌 Calories burned: 3,054 kcal

📌 Steps taken: 30,166

If you like numbers and want to see exactly where I suffered, have a look on Strava:

🚙 The Road to Nowhere – Păltiniș at the Crack of Dawn

I arrive in Păltiniș (a mountain resort near Sibiu) at 9 in the morning and, surprise: nobody skiing. The chairlifts were running empty, the resort deserted – perfect for a day of climbing a mountain without the chaos.

Because I had a 4x4, I was able to drive another 4-5 km up the forest road with no worries about ice or snow. Basically, I cut some distance off the route and started the climb directly from a better spot.

❄️ Waist-Deep Snow and Advanced Survival Techniques

In summer this trail is an easy stroll, but in winter the situation changes completely. Without snowshoes, the trail becomes a nightmare – you sink in every 10 metres. If you're lucky, only up to your knees. If not… below the belt. 😅

For variety, I tested several survival techniques:

✔️ Crawling on all fours – for the sections where my backpack was pulling me halfway backwards.

✔️ Strategic jumps – trying to leap into a footprint someone else left, only to sink in even deeper.

✔️ Accepting my fate – the point where I realised that no matter what I do, I sink anyway.

🎒 The Gear – Everything I Carried (and Yes, It All Paid Off)

📦 In the backpack:

✅ Drone – to film the mountain, but also as an excuse for breaks.

✅ 1.5 L of water – a thermos would have been better, but weight is a factor.

✅ Fleece, headlamp, protein bars, first-aid kit – because you never know what might happen.

✅ Gaiters, microspikes, survival blanket, bear spray, taser – just in case.

✅ Ski goggles and sunglasses – because the snow glares enough to blind you.

👕 On me:

✅ Waterproof trousers, winter boots – to avoid turning into a snowman.

✅ Base layer, softshell, beanie, buff – layer upon layer, the perfect combination.

☀️ The Weather – Cold, but Pleasant

📌 Temperature on the car dashboard at the start: -16°C

📌 On the trail: Warm in the sun, cold in the shade

📌 Wind: Almost non-existent

It was one of the nicest winter days – cold, but the sun made up for everything. With the right gear, you don't even feel the cold.

🏁 The Finish – Was It Worth It? Absolutely. Would I Repeat It Without Snowshoes? Absolutely NOT.

If you ask me, the trail was superb, but if you ask my knees, they'd probably say something else. It broke me physically, but the view from the top was worth every step.

Would I go back up Cindrel in winter? Yes, but with snowshoes. Without them? Never.

💡 Want to Climb Cindrel in Winter Too? Here's What You Need to Know:

✅ Bring snowshoes! If you don't, you'll be sinking in non-stop.

✅ Dress well, but don't overdo it. The sun helps a lot.

✅ Don't underestimate the trail. It's easy in summer, but in winter it wrecks your legs.

✅ If you have a 4x4, use it. You can save a few km of walking.
